After her grandma begins sharing the story of how she became the woman she was meant to be, the young girl learns all about the mission of Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina: to instill each of its students with self-respect, confidence, compassion, pride, and preparation to compete as a professional in an ever-changing world. As the little girl falls in love with the spirit, sisterhood, and legacy of Bennett College, she discovers it is never too early to think about higher education or becoming the best woman she can be.
This book is also the author’s tribute to the HBCU (Historically Black College) that her mother and several female family members attended. Bennett College is special for many reasons and is often referred to as “the Mecca of Black girl magic.” Beautifully illustrated with a legendary message, this book tells the story of a young girl who learns all about Bennett College and its mission from her grandmother, a proud Bennett Belle. {ages 5 and up}

This gorgeously illustrated book gives readers the important message and reminder that love is for everyone, love is to be freely shared and given, and love is everywhere in in countless formats. The illustrations show different ways that people can love each other–family, friends, marriage/dating–as well as the world around them. This book would make excellent discussion starters for parents/caregivers and their children they love to talk about how to recognize as well as give the gift of love.

This book seems a bit specialized to me and it is a sweet story sharing an important part of the author’s life and her family’s. The story itself is about a girl and her grandmother sharing the story of Bennett College and being a Bennett Belle. It discusses how this group’s mission is to instill self-respect, confidence and more for each of its female students. It sounds like an amazing college and I wish I knew more about it when I went to school.
